The cartouche represents a rope folded and tied together at the end. The word cartouche came from the French word for cartridge because its shape reminded Napoleon's soldiers of their gun cartridges. The Ancient Egyptians did not used the word cartouche, their word for the enclosure was "shenu" and it means "to encircle." The circle shape of the "shenu" reminded every one of the power of the king's rule held over everything the sun encircled.
