A cartouche is a rope-like oval shaped line that is drawn around the king's throne and birth name. The cartouche represents a rope folded and tied together at the end. The word cartouche came from the French word for cartridge because its shape reminded Napoleon's soldiers of their gun cartridges. The Ancient Egyptians did not used the word cartouche, their word for the enclosure was "shenu" and it means "to encircle."
